Here is a space that discusses the implementation of UNSCR 1325 across Africa and its impact on the lives of African women.

The United Nations Security Council passed the Resolution 1325 after countless efforts and lobbying by several women organisations for women to be recognized as more than victims. The UNSCR 1325, often referred to as the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, is a landmark resolution that recognizes the differentiated impacts of conflict on women and girls. It calls for meaningful participation of women at all levels of decision-making in peace processes, the protection of women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence and the integration of gender analysis across peacekeeping, humanitarian intervention and post-conflict reconstruction.

Since then, there have been nine additional resolutions and countries have been encouraged to adapt the resolution and create National Action Plans (NAPs) to ensure that women are both protected and included in all aspects of governance and leadership.

Beyond1325 looks at the issues that have surrounded UNSCR 1325 and analyses the different United Nations (UN) member states’ NAPS in Africa, and how in adopting it  (or not) Africa has improved or can improve the lives of women and their participation in peace and security. By focusing on women’s efforts, successes and challenges in peacebuilding, issues that affect women and girls and their empowerment, Beyond1325 offers critical analyses into the issues that affect the substantive empowerment of women, and the opportunities NAPs have opened for them (or not). Beyond1325 recognizes and celebrates women’s activities and efforts in all spheres of life.

Particularly, Beyond1325 seeks to amplifying African Feminist Perspectives and African Storytelling on issues that affect Africa and African women.
